HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The District Council of Riviere Du Rempart is the first rural authority to offer library services to its inhabitants. The Council Library opened its doors in 1955. Today, after more than 60 years of existence, the library under the charge of the responsible officer is undergoing major changes.

 

LIBRARY SERVICES

Membership is free and open to all inhabitants of the District North. Applicants must be at least 4 years old. To become a member, the person has to fill an application form which is available at the circulation desk. Books /Periodicals can be borrowed for a period of 28 days and a fine of Rs 1.00 per day per book is charged for any overdue materials.  Library materials can also be renewed by phone. Requests for information can be made either in person or by telephone.

 

Document to produce to become member as follows:

  1. National I.D for Adult
  2. Bus School pass or Birth Certificate for Student
  3. Rs 25 for Membership Card
  4. Photocopy of the I.D of your guarantor
  5. Recent proof of address (C.E.B.,C.W.A.,or Mauritius Telecom) of both subscriber & guarantor

 

Note that the guarantor’s address must be different from the applicant’s address.

 

The Library has an estimated stock of 30.000 books and periodicals in English, French & Hindi including a Mauritiana collection (Local Authors). In addition, apart from providing its traditional service of lending of books, the Library has a Reference section to cater for users information needs. The Public at large also benefit from books on specific subject such as Management, Business, Accounting, Science & medicines. Furthermore,  the library has got also a reading room which provides local and foreign newspapers & magazines to users for on spot consultation.  This service is open to all members of the public and is free of charge.Indeed, in order to keep pace with new technologies the council has invested in IT equipments. Actually, the Library has an audio Visual Section equipped with 3 Computers with full internet access to all our members & Public.

Ø  Abraham Lincoln Library aim is to adhere to the standard motto “the right information at the right time” which is to be respected by all libraries.

Ø  To promote local authors by acquiring copies of their books.

Ø  To be a dynamic centre for knowledge and lifelong learning.

Ø  To empowers users in the information age.

Ø  To provide a Library for intellectual and personal enrichment.
